PIER GIORGIO MORANDI

Born in Italy, he performed for ten years with the orchestra of the La Scala Theatre in Milan as " first oboe " . At the same time he studied composition at the " G Verdi " Conservatory as well as conducting at the " Mozarteum " Accademy in Salzburg (with Leitner). During that period he was also assistant to conductors Riccardo Muti and Giuseppe Patané. In 1987 he per - fected his skill in the US with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa and won, in the same year, the Conducting Competition in Tanglewood. In 1989 he became second conductor at the Opera in Rome, where he conducted Ernani and Madama Butterfly as well as symphonic concerts. He performed together with prestigious orchestras such as those in Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchester in Munich, the philharmonics of Tokyo and London, LSO (at the Royal Albert Hall), the Flemish Radio Orchestra, etc. He performed in lyrical theatres in Palermo, Trieste, Marseilles (La Forza del Destino with José Cura, Don Pasquale ), Tokyo (La Bohéme , Cavalleria rusticana , Pagliacci, Rigoletto , Falstaff , Il Tabaro, Sora Angelica, Gianni Schicchi ), Stockholm (Maria Stuarda ), Buenos Aires (Otello ), Bilbao (Il Trovatore)Budapest (where he is annually invited as visiting - conductor and where he has conducted, in recent years, works such as Gioconda, Aida , Macbeth, Madama Butterfly ), Berlin (DOB - Nabucco , Gioconda ), Seoul (Simon Boccanegra, Turandot ), Moscow (tour with the Opera in Rome in 2001 - Tosca ), Zürich (Don Carlo, Maria Stuarda ). This year he has contracts in Ravenna, the Arena di Verona, the La Monnaie Theatre in Brussels, in Frankfurt, etc. In the next season he will perform as main visiting conductor at the Royal Opera i n Stockholm. In 2005 he will make his debut at the Staatsoper in Vienna. His first recordings are with the Opera in Rome (Don Chisciotte by Paisiello). The production Arnoldo from Piacenza was transferred to DVD. CDs are also available produced by Naxos, Hungaroton, Nuova Era, Erato that include complete works for opera, arias, overtures as well as vocal - symphonic works.
