MARJANA LIPOVSEK

Born in Lubljana, Slovakia, she studied piano and pedagogy, followed by canto at the Graz Conservatory, soon becoming a soloist with the Staatsoper in Vienna and the Hamburg Opera. She performed in operas such as: Saint - Saëns Samson et Dalila (at the Bregenz Festival, and also in Berlin, Vienna and Paris). At the same festival she made her debut as Carmen in Bizet's opera. Her repertoire includes operas by Wagner - Das Ring der Nibelungen (in Munich, under the baton of Wolfgang Sawallisch, in Chicago with Zubin Mehta and also in San Francisco), Die Walküre conducted by Riccardo Muti (in the open - ing of the 1994 La Scala season) - the Verdi operas (Falstaff at La Scala with Lorin Maazel, and at the Salzburg Festival with Georg Solti, Deutsche Oper Berlin under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Il Trovatore in Zürich with Riccardo Chailly), Mozart (L'Incoronazione di Popea in Salzburg, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt), Strauss (Die Frau ohne Schatten in Munich, Salzburg under the baton of Solti, at Staatsoper in Vienna, and Elektra at Covent Garden with Solti). In 1997 she achieved the outstanding performance of singing (at the premiere of the production with Enescu's Oedipe at the Staatsoper in Vienna)the parts of Iocasta as well as the Sphinx. This also happened in Bucharest during the "George Enescu" International Festival 2001. She is also approaching vocal - sym - phonic scores (with world famous orchestras). Some of the titles in her repertoire have been recorded by famous record companies: EMI, Sony, Deutsche Grammophon, BMG Ariola, many of the CDs being awarded with The Great Disc Award, The Special Award of the New Disc Academy, etc. She was also awarded the "Gustav Mahler" Golden Medal, as well as the title of Kammersängerin in Munich (1993)and Vienna (1996).
