Born
in Timisoara, Romania, began studying piano at the age of 6, then became
a student at the Timi soara Conservatoire - pedagogy section - , then
at the National Music University of Bucharest - conducting and composition
section, where he studied with George Georgescu, Constantin Silvestri,
Mihail Andricu. Starting with 1960 he became a conductor of the National
Opera of Bucharest, making his debut with Lakmé by Delibes
and La Traviata by Verdi, and continuing in the course of time
with great titles of the Italian, French, German, Russian reper - toire.
He was then appointed chief conductor of the National Opera of Bucharest,
and had numerous symphonic concerts. He participated in tours abroad (Moscow,
Warsaw, Sofia, Prague, Berlin, Athens, Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Venice,
Torino, Beirut), both with the Opera ensemble and as a guest on prestigious
stages. In 1976 he became a resident conductor at the Belgrade Opera,
being at the same time a guest of the Opera Festival in Las Palmas (1984
- 1985), and in 1985 made his successful debut at Staatsoper Vienna, conducting
La Bohème by Puccini (directed by Franco Zeffirelli);in
the 90 's he returned to the Austrian capital city for sev - eral performances
at Volksoper, among which the concert pre - miere of Lakmé (leading
role - Natalie Dessay). He is also a composer, his creations in the line
of opera (Motanul înca ltat, Dragoste si jertfa , Ba lcescu
), ballet (Prima vara, Nastasia, Alba ca Zapada ), symphonic,
chamber or film music being extremely appreciated. He was manager of the
National Opera between 1991 - 1993. His intense activity was rewarded
with important titles and prizes:in 2001 he received The Romanian Star
conferred by the President of Romania.
